Wizards - Internet Survey
- 6 monthly survey that tracks the number of host computers connected
to the Internet: i.e., the size of the Net. Begun in 1994, over ten
years later the graph
is still on that upward curve.
- Netcraft
Web Server Survey
- Netcraft tracks the number of servers holding World Wide Web sites
- i.e., the size of the Web. Jan 99: 5 million; Jan 02: 36 million;
Jan. 05: 61 million - still growing. Market share of Apache, open source
software, still growing fast while all others including Microsoft decline.
- Global Reach
- Good website with global
internet statistics comparing the proportions of the web that are
in different languages. Also careful and detailed discussions and essays
on the reasons for and implications of the rapid changes that are happening.
- CyberAtlas
- Marketing information about the Web. Useful stats tools page. In
Jan '02, the UK has maintained its 3rd place, but China has rocketed
up into 2nd - US (168m) China (33.7m) UK (33m) Germany (26m) Japan (22m)
S.Korea (16m).
- Neilsen's web statistics
- Commercial information company, but usually something interesting
is available free. eg, June '05, the fastest growing category of website
for advertising revenue is general community websites - by far.
- Yahoo!'s
internet statistics
- Links to all sorts of wonderful statistics and information relating
to the internet.
- NUA,
the Irish consultancy
- Also has good statistics on the internet. NUA reckons 513 million
users worldwide in Jan '02 - 605 million in June 2005.
- Internet indicators
- Excellent internet statistics - eg, 1 in 6 people use the internet
in Europe and North America; 2.5 billion hours spent waiting in 1998.
Strangely, its excellent statistics are not up to date, but it is a
good source of information with some really good links to other sites.
- UNESCO
portal to the Knowledge Society
- Member States have mandated the Organization to keep them abreast
with these new ethical, legal and societal challenges by establishing
a permanent international monitoring mechanism.

- A project to archive the whole of the web. The Wayback Machine will
take you back to an early manifestation of your favourite site - even

- Grid computing
- This is an excellent summary description of grid computing, which
will enable new uses of the internet.
- Research networking
- EC pages about the current programme to develop grid computing and
