Smithsonian Institution
The Smithsonian continues to explore ways of visually exploring large databases of complex information, such as museum collections databases. Historywired, though launched some time ago, is still a very interesting interface.
Historywired
Explore the Smithsonian's most iconic objects using interactive visual data mapping technology. The software was developed as a way of displaying information about the financial markets - see Smartmoney.com for that application of it.
Revealing Things
The Smithsonian also used Thinkmap software to allow people to explore its database. The software site is still well worth a visit, but the Smithsonian's implementation, Revealing Things, has now gone, it seems.
The Museum Informatics Project
A project at the University of California, Berkeley, to coordinate the application of information technology in museums and other organized, non-book collections.
